Midsummer Blessings: A Guide to Litha Magic
Share
Hello witches, pagans, and lovers of magic and mystery. Here on Happenstance Books & Merch, we celebrate seasonal celebrations, also called the Wheel of the Year, as well as phases of the moon. Today's post is all about the summer solstice, also called Litha.
I share information on solar deities, symbols, suggestions for your altar, crystals, colours, a ritual you might enjoy, a tarot spread, and a simple recipe.
What is Litha?
Litha, also known as Midsummer or the Summer Solstice, is a pagan festival celebrating the longest day of the year.
It typically occurs around June 20th to 22nd in the northern hemisphere. This festival is a celebration of the peak of the sun's power, and is bursting with life force, abundance, and transformational energy. It is one of the eight sabbats in the Wheel of the Year in modern Pagan and Wiccan traditions.
Solar Deities
Ra (Egyptian): The sun god who is at his peak power during the summer solstice.
Helios (Greek): The personification of the sun, driving his chariot across the sky.
Lugh (Celtic): A god associated with light and the sun, often celebrated during this time.
Symbols
Litha is rich with symbols that reflect the themes of light, growth, and nature's abundance:
- Sun: The most prominent symbol of Litha, representing the peak of solar power, warmth, and light.
- Fire: Symbolises the sun's energy and power, and bonfires are commonly lit to honour it.
- Oak Tree: Represents strength, endurance, and the peak of growth. It is often associated with the Oak King, who reigns from Yule to Litha.
- Sunflowers: These flowers turn to face the sun and symbolise the radiance and vitality of the solstice.
- St. John's Wort: An herb traditionally collected during Litha for its protective and healing properties.
- Lavender: Known for its calming properties, it is often used in rituals and celebrations for purification and protection.
- Honey and Mead: Represent the sweetness and abundance of the season. Honey is associated with bees, which are active and thriving during this time.
- Circles and Wheels: Symbolise the cyclical nature of the seasons and the Wheel of the Year. The sun wheel, a fire-lit wheel rolled down a hill, is a traditional Litha symbol.
- Fairies: Represent the magical and mystical aspects of nature, believed to be especially active during Litha.

Colours
- Gold: Represents the sun and its powerful energy.
- Yellow: Symbolises light, joy, and vitality.
- Green: Reflects the lush, abundant growth of nature.
- Red: Signifies the intensity and passion of the season.
Crystals
Several crystals are associated with Litha, each resonating with light, energy, abundance, and growth:
- Citrine: Known as the "Stone of Success" and "Merchant's Stone," citrine is associated with prosperity, abundance, and joy. It carries the energy of the sun, promoting positivity and light.
- Sunstone: This crystal embodies the sun's energy, enhancing vitality, personal power, and leadership. It brings joy, warmth, and strength.
- Carnelian: Associated with motivation, endurance, leadership, and courage. Its fiery energy aligns with the passionate and active energy of the solstice.
- Amber: Although not a crystal but fossilised tree resin, amber is associated with ancient wisdom, protection, and healing. It captures the warmth and light of the sun, making it a powerful stone for Litha.
- Clear Quartz: A versatile crystal known for its amplifying properties. It enhances the energy of other stones and is associated with clarity, light, and spiritual growth.
- Peridot: Also known as the "Stone of the Sun," peridot promotes abundance, prosperity, and happiness. Its vibrant green colour connects it to growth and nature.
- Garnet: Associated with passion, energy, and strength. It helps in manifesting desires and aligning with the fiery energy of the sun.
How to Celebrate Litha
Litha is a truly magical moment in the Wheel of the Year — when the sun reaches its peak and the world is bursting with life and energy. It's the perfect time to honour the power of the sun and celebrate nature's abundance.
You might light a bonfire to symbolise solar energy, using the flames for purification or protective spells, or simply gather with loved ones outdoors for a picnic or a gentle walk through the woods.
This is a wonderful season for gathering herbs and flowers too — many are believed to be at their most potent during Litha — so take a basket and go foraging mindfully.
And don't forget to get creative — making flower crowns, sun wheels, or nature-inspired charms adds a hands-on, heartfelt layer to your celebration.
Get out and bask in the sunshine! Soak it in, and let it invigorate you. There's nothing better than soaking in the heady energy of midsummer, and if you end up having a snooze, I see it as harvesting that energy for later.
However you choose to mark it, Litha invites us to pause, soak in the light, and honour the fullness of the year.
Ideas for Your Litha Altar
- Candles: Yellow, gold, orange, and red candles to represent the sun's power and warmth.
- Sun Symbols: Sun-shaped decorations, sun wheels, and sunflowers.
- Flowers and Herbs: Sunflowers, daisies, roses, and lavender, plus herbs like St. John's Wort, mugwort, chamomile, and mint.
- Greenery: Oak leaves, ferns, and other green plants to represent the lush growth of summer.
- Crystals: As mentioned above.
- Symbols of Abundance: Bowls of fresh fruit and summer vegetables.
- Fairy Figurines or Items: Small fairy figurines, fairy houses, or offerings for nature spirits.
- Deity Representations: Statues, images, or symbols of deities associated with the sun.
- Water Bowl: To represent the balance of elements and the nourishing aspect of summer rains.
- Athame or Wand: Decorate with summer-themed ribbons or symbols.
- Litha Incense: Scents like frankincense, myrrh, lemon, or cinnamon.
- Offering Bowl: Fill with honey, milk, wine, or freshly baked bread.
- Decorative Items: Seashells, feathers, or other natural items that resonate with you.
Use as many or as few of these as you choose — what matters most is using what is local to your area, or what simply resonates with you.
Sunrise Gratitude Ritual
Purpose: To honour the sun and express gratitude for its life-giving energy.
You will need:
- A bowl of water
- Fresh flowers (sunflowers, daisies, roses)
- A journal and pen
Steps:
- Preparation: Wake up early and find a quiet place outdoors where you can see the sunrise.
- Setup: Arrange your materials on a small table or blanket, with the bowl of water at the centre and flowers around it.
- Meditation: Sit comfortably and focus on the rising sun. Feel its warmth and energy. Take deep breaths and connect with the natural world around you.
- Gratitude Reflection: Reflect on the past months and express gratitude for the growth and abundance in your life. Write down your thoughts in your journal.
- Water Offering: Dip your fingers in the bowl of water and sprinkle some on the ground as an offering to the earth.
- Flower Offering: Place the flowers at the base of a nearby tree as a gift to nature.
- Closing: Take a moment to feel the sun's energy filling you with warmth and light.
While the summer solstice is a wonderful time, it also marks the slow slide into autumn. The Oak King passes his crown to the Holly King — hopefully with none of the drama we saw in Midwinter Magic, when the opposite was happening!
